Sickness Procedure

On the first day of absence from work, the employee must report the first day of sickness absence to the Council’s absence telephone line on 01639 686834.  This will ensure that the employee receives pay, as per their entitlement, whilst on sickness absence.  The employee must also ring the same telephone number on the first day they are fit to resume work, even if that day is not a day they are required to attend work. This will close the period of sickness absence on the Council’s records.

The employee must also telephone their line manager, on the first day of sickness absence and on first day they are fit to resume work, if required to by the manager as per local sickness absence reporting arrangements.

Maximising Attendance at Work Policy

Unison STRONGLY recommends if you are asked to attend a sickness meeting that you take your rep in with you. 


  • You have a right to representation.....(its what you pay your fees for!)
  • Please don't be afraid to ask for advice and help.... (its what you pay your fees for!)
  • It is advisable, where possible, to keep your line manager informed of any changes in your personal/ health situation. They may be able to offer you advice/help.
  • Should you be asked in for a meeting (even an informal chat) let your workplace rep know or ring the Unison office as soon as you are asked. It gives time for the best person to be allocated to you for the meeting.
